When my King Keg needs a bit of gas I have to lift it out of my fridge to gain access to the valve with the CO2 cylinder. Also, from my other thread on safety valves, I have a bit of an ongoing issue with the “leaky” rubber band safety valve on the standard S30 valve. So, if anybody’s interested, I’ve taken a hacksaw and blowtorch to my standard S30 valve to create a horizontal version so I can charge the King Keg in the fridge.
So I removed the valve from the cap and took all the rubber seals off.

I then cut the valve in two using the safety valve groove as a guide. Then rummaged in the shed to find a 15mm brass elbow compression fitting.

I made a mistake and forgot to block the safety valve vent hole but did it second time around.

Then assembled the 3 bits together.

Put the rubber seals back in place except for the safety valve rubber band. A separate 15 p.s.i. safety valve was fitted on the pressure gauge “T”.

I had to modify the barrel cap to file off the flats in the S30 valve hole so the hole was circular allowing my modified fitting to be positioned correctly.
Hope this has been of interest. Cheers.

Was the 15psi safety valve reasonable price? If so where from.
I've been looking at adjustable ones for bottle filling too.
Even considered the old style pressure cooker weights.

Just as a post script to my earlier post. Some might have noticed the non-return valve spigot is missing in the final assembly pic. This is because the spigot is threaded into the main body and held in place by thread fix. During the soldering process the thread fix became “un-fixed” and was easily undone. As it makes it easier to change the non-return rubber I used PTFE tape to seal the thread so if and when the rubber seal needs to be replaced I can remove the spigot to make life a bit easier.

Hi Richie, just a follow up from my earlier post, I’ve had a chance to pressure test my modified KK cap and sorry to say the safety valve I’ve fitted has a very slow but persistent leak which is a bit of a pain to say the least. Probably intended to be fitted to a live system, boiler or compressor etc. So would be ok during carbonation but would need to be topped up regularly in “storage”. I’ve replaced it with a vent that I can manually control. Not perfect but better than constant leak.

I notice in the spec that minimum pressure is 16p.s.i. that's a bit over the top end of a pressure barrel spec. Nice idea though. I'm currently on a quest to find the best way to eliminate leaks from my King Keg!

I didn't notice that, but it would be kind of cool. You may be able to still use the pressure sensors and use an arduino for the results. But too many projects on the go to start another one just yet.

That coming from the regulator will work just be careful with the pressure, and set psi at or just below the max on your pressure the barrel can handle.
Thanks, I'm after an adapter to refill the S30 gas cylinder, not a method to use a big cylinder through the S30 filling port.

I fitted a bulkhead ball lock gas connector for large CO2 cylinder use but was interested in giving my portable S30 gas bottle a second life.
No refilling stations or swaps here in NZ.

Hi @RoomWithABrew . If I understand your question, you’re looking for a way to connect a large CO2 cylinder regulator output to an S30 cylinder? If that’s correct and depending on your metal working/plumbing skills I’d suggest getting a S30 barrel cap valve (connects to S30 cylinder) and remove the non-return valve stem by heating the valve up then unscrew the stem from the main body. Then drill the threaded section that’s left to 10mm to take a short length of 10mm OD copper tube. Solder tube in position. Then connect 1/4” BSP female fitting to 10mm tube (solder, push fit or compression fitting). Screw corny gas post into 1/4” BSP fitting. Make sense? :confused.:

Will the push-fit connector give you enough torque to be able to unscrew the S30 Cylinder afterwards?
I don't think I'd personally be brave enough to try refilling a cylinder :-)
Good call. I only had a push on connector in my "bits box". I would've preferred an end feed soldered connector.
Quick visit to the shed .....

...could do something like this?
Failing that just hold the copper tube with pliers or mole grips or the like 😂
