Making Red Wine

I'm told I can't make a red wine because red wine is fermented on the grape skins.
What would happen if I used Currants to rep!ace sultanas in a suit and wine? Currents seem to be made from a red grape.

Not sure about currants but others recommend using elderberries to bump up body and colour. Don't know if that's any help to you?

Red wine is made from grapes and much of the colour and tannins come from the skins. As @soupdragon says there are things that can approximate these elements such as elderberry and sultanas/currents can add vinosity but even with quite expensive red wine kits they struggle to match a good (£10+) shop bought bottle of red.

Oh dear, there goes my my hope to make good reds Shame even a £12 bottle is just the equivalent of 3 pints in the pub.
