Oak Chips?

What are your thought on adding oak chips to my primary when I make an ale?

I added oak chips (soaked in brandy) to a long 'secondary' a few weeks back. Unfortunately I've no idea what effect they will have as the beer is still in the secondary and will be for most of a year....
