It's quite a standard ale, but it's by far the best ale i've ever tried. I want to clone it using partial mash technique...the recipe is quite obvious really, but any sort of input on a hop schedule or quantities would be most obliged :)

Munton's Extra Light DME is supposed to be very close to Maris Otter, so i'll go with that. Cara Gold is not available to home brewers, sadly - so i'm subbing for some carapils and pale crystal.

sounds like an easy beer to drink:) i like a nice clean easy to swallow ale

well the link you gave tells us Fuggles, Hereford Golding and Styrian Golding Hops are used..
as to when to add and in what quantity??

is it a very dry beer? if so then perhaps the bulk go in for the full boil

if its got a hoppy arroma perhaps its dry hopped too??

if yes to both i would try for my first attempt something like

35-40gm fuggles for full boil
15-20gm hereford goldings for last 15mins
10-15gm styrian goldings dry hopping in 2ndray fermentation

workin on the assumption(probably incorrectly) that they have listed the hops in order of magnitude used

But as i am just an AG newbie myself im not speaking with any authority on the subject, its just my not very well educated guess at the solution

Nailling down a recipe could take a number of refining brews and dead ends so get cracking, just sit on at least 6 bottles of each variation so you can do a side by side comparison when you have a few brews to compare,,

enjoy the fruits of your brew....

caragold you can get here :thumb:

You, sir, are a legend! Apparently it's a really good malt for gold/light ales. Might even give the guy a ring and see if i can drive down to save on postage, it's not far from here.

PhatFil - I'd probably describe it as a rich, clean and golden light flavour, high hop aroma with a smooth honey-like sweetness in there, it's almost like a really good estery lager with a citrusy flavour. The best way to describe it, probably, is the most well-balanced ale you can imagine - not in a bigging them up sort of way, but it's got a great likable balance of all ingredients and everything comes through.

There are also Northern Brewer in there, no idea where to put them :p

Gonna get some water treatment on the go too, or possibly use bottled spring water. I've also gave the company an email asking if they can drop me any information on the hop schedule. I'm assuming that fuggles are bittering, northern brewer are for flavour and the two goldings are for aroma. Dry hopping is a good idea indeed :)

Whee! A reply:

Hi Rob,
We don’t use Fuggles anymore, HNB is the bittering hops, Bobeck (60%) and Goldings (40 %) are use in the aroma.
I hope this help.
Happy brewing.
F

I can only assume that HNB stands for Hereford Northern Brewer as I think they grow a lot of their own hops locally. Bobek are a type of Stryian Goldings and available online :) Lovely of them to give me the percentages too! Here's an updated recipe, am I roughly in line with hop quantities?

As for the malts, I'm not 100% confident partial mashing having only done it once, so I'm going to steep the CaraGold this time and rely on the DME for percentage - if something goes wrong in a 5%er, it's no biggie, but failing enzymatic conversion in this case will have it drop to around 3% ABV, pretty much ruining it :( lol. No doubt I'll make this again if it's good, and I'll partial mash with some base malt then.

I'm a big fan of Purity and have done a Mad Goose clone a few times. Pure Gold is also good and best of luck with it, I don't know much about partial mash recipes, but I'm sure it will turn out fine. The only place I know to get the Cara Gold is the Worcester Hop Shop, as Mark pointed out; it does give a nice colour and toffee flavour. I think the HNB would be Hersbrucker Northern Brewer from Germany, readily available, and something I seem to use a lot of :?
