Hi all,

Has anyone used gelatine for clearing their wine. It appears to be cheaper than finings (For a tight yorkshire man like me  ) always trying to save a few pennies.

The leaf seems even better value than powder.

So, have you tried it? if so which did you use and how? and most importantly what was the results like?

Cheers

Andy.

Hi...I used it for the first time on my last beer. I used leaf and it did help, slow but it got there.
Boil your water, let it cool, mix with the gelatine then into your brew. Same with wine I would say.

That's the sort of language I understand :thumb: Maybe we could meet up one day and discuss/swap money saving ideas? ;) ;)

I try not to use any in wine or beer. I give wine time and cool the beer. However sometimes I do and I always use gelitine. Disolve some of leaf in a little water at 80c the mix it in. Then leave for 24 hrs :thumb:

It can however I find strip out some of the flavour in beer and red wines.

Yeah like it's your round

Thanks for the info guys.

Not averse to cutting costs, but leaf gelatine is not recommended for wine. Furthermore, modified gelatine, which is included in some finings, only does half the job and reduces tannin, potentially taking the bite out of the wine.
