Just back form lunch and a few pints with the family as it's last if the holidays so decided to grab a draft from the garage.Sitting out back enjoying the sun and noticed a distinct call I've not heard in years and when I looked up it was a Red Kite circling the hospital grounds behind me which sits on the edge of town.
Been here for twenty years and this is the first time I've heard and seen one at home although have come across many before.
What a delightful sight though does make a difference to the squawking magpies that never leave here.

I like it when you see a bit of wildlife. We were off round Stover country park earlier and seen a green woodpecker "anting" on the ground...he was up and away with his laughing call in no time.

I mind a few years back I was out with the kids at a country park that I've been going to for years and came across a baby newt in the marsh grass.
This was there first time seeing one but then I told we used to catch them when I was younger as we went swimming in the local reservoir which is not allowed now at all

They were in a very shaded wood by a stream...we thought they were butterflies...the picture does no credit they were electric blue.

Yeh seen them last week in the Ness wood. Also seen a red squirrel which is getting more common in Ireland due to the pine Martin making a revival
Spiders at the moment are anweird and creepy thing as I think I've seen more variety of these this year in what I have in my whole life.
And there's the resident magpies squawking again.Beautiful bird but a noisy one.

That Thursday that was the hottest day on record I was cycling in the chilterns. There was absolutely noone around, no traffic, no people, nada. Suddenly I say a red kite hovering over a field looking for prey. It was so close to me. I almost felt I could touch it. So I stopped in the middle of the road and marveled at the beauty of this stunning bird of prey. I breifly looked around and out of nowhere there was a mini traffic jam of three cars behind me. Where the feck these cars came from I've no idea, as the roads seemed to be clear for quite some distance

They are so majestic and a marvel to watch.
We were on holiday in Trim county Meath outside of Dublin a few years back and Tracy the owner had a few ferrel cats that she fed with milk and bread and asked if we would do the same whilst staying in the house.
So we did,but on the third day we had finished breakfast and I was washing up looking out the window into the field.
Now bear in mind this is rural Ireland and as green as the eye can see with a power line in the field with hundreds of birds resting on the cables and the grass is about 2 foot long but amongst this there were 4 cats 2nof which were kittens but all in stealth mode stalking through the grass below the birds waiting on one to fall from its perch.Absolutely amazing.

We are lucky up here in the lakes as we see so many different birds every day we hardly notice them this one is my favourite and is one you don't seen often unless you know where and when to look! wink...

Tawny I recon.

I have only ever seen one tawny it was sitting on top of a telegraph pole in the middle of town (a very unexpected sight) years ago when i was on my way home from the pub, i thought i was seeing things but SWMBO (who was far more sober) confirmed our lucky sighting the next day.

We Were lucky when we lived in Rutland as we had a multitude of birds in our garden and in the the sky, red kites were plentiful as they were bred in and around Corby, we even had nuthatches & woodpeckers feeding off the bird feeding station in the back garden and my favourite the Buzzard nested in a tree close to the house. We still see red kites and buzzards now we've moved but no nuthatches, and of course we had ospreys on Rutland Water (tho' never saw one)

I love watching the red kites in the garden. There are dozens nesting in nearby trees. This time of year they enjoy ciculing waiting for the silage to be cut so they can catch all the field mice
