    Wtf happened to the SG?!

Where and how did you take your sample to test your SG? If you took it from the tap, it's very possible the ingredients were not mixed properly, and you took a high SG sample from partially or wholly undiluted extract from the tap body. The calculations in BeerSmith or other brewing software...

    URGENT! Airlock advise please!

What's an airlock ? Haven't used one for years. I use 2 or 3 layers of clingwrap over the top of the fermenter, held in place with the rubber seal removed from the inside of the lid. And it's great to see the fermentation happening, which you can't do through the lid. A bit like granny when...

    House Beers...

For my house beer, I want one which I can drink without losing my head too quickly. This is my version of a MILD. The recipe originally is from a source which I now cannot remember, although I tweaked it slightly. I shared a couple of bottles of my latest version with a new brewer yesterday, and...

    My first Stout

After 3 years of brewing AG, I thought it was time for my first Stout. Brewed it today. Kept it simple. 90 minute single infusion mash at 66ºC, 90 minute boil. Achieved 91.3% mash efficiency, in my normal range. 3.5 kg Pale Malt 1.0 kg Flaked Barley 0.5 kg Roast Barley 0.1 kg Rice Hulls (wish...

    Shock! Ferrari Win Grand Prix

Alonso didn't win. He might have been first across the line, but he didn't win. He's shown himself to be a bad sportsman (and with not much of the man or sport in that). The real winner was Massa. He probably faced dismissal from the team had he not obeyed the team "suggestion" that his teammate...

Brew to Drink OR Drink to Brew??

When I'm brewing, I'm motivated by a great hobby by which I can produce fantastic beer to my taste. When I'm drinking, I'm motivated by the amazement I'm drinking beer I've brewed and which is to my taste. The question is not capable of a logical answer. It's like which came first, the chicken...

    Hard white lumps!!

I use Dry Malt Extract only for my yeast starters. I add my required weight of malt to my pot, then add cold water. I walk a way for about 30 minutes, by which time it has dissolved by itself. If there is any not dissolved, it's easy to give it a bit of a stir as I heat the pot.

    WB-06

If you want to get the esters you are looking for in a hefeweizen, you need to use a liquid yeast such as WY3068. The idea is to make a starter, and to pitch that at high kraeusen. Do not aearate your main batch, as that will give the yeast some stress which encourages the banana and clove...

    Bridestone Bards Mild 19/03/2010

Whoa, to my way of thinking, that's a lorry load of black malt at .23 kg. Wouldn't be to my taste, but otherwise it looks OK.

    When to bottle

What's the rush? In my view, you'd be better leaving your brew for at least a couple of weeks in primary. The extra time will allow the yeast to do nice things to your beer, and improve it. Even though primary fermentation is over, yeast continues to work for some time reducing fermentation...

    Batch water

Doesn't really matter all that much. If you've dialled your system in so you can actually get 2 lots of 13½ litres, that's great, and I'd go for it. I can't get mine down that accurately, because different beers have different grains and quantities. I add a mashout to my mashtun, stir...

Is it ok to use an aluminium pot to do extract brewing???

I clean my kettle as soon as I've finished with it, and use a plastic type scourer. Glad you've not had a problem.

    Jacob's Hefeweizen

It's still in the fermenter in the fridge at 19ºC, and continues to bubble away. Will look at bottling it when it stops, and give an update then. This thing went nuts over the first 2 or 3 days. It filled the fermenter with kraeusen, and then proceeded to overflow the blowoff tube bottle and...

Is it ok to use an aluminium pot to do extract brewing???

Don't use a SS scrubber on aluminium. Alumimium has a passive surface oxide layer, which gives it corrosion resistance. Scouring or polishing it will remove this layer. Just use one of those plastic type scrubbies, or a sponge, and remove just the obvious crud etc, no more. It's all I do with...

    If I recycle.....Will I go to Heaven?????

Recycling won't do it for you. Here's how: John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. :)
