if you do the odd TC too , just to spice it up, it becomes a bit like 'revels for grown ups'

Something I thought about but for the effort it takes and the time they will last on the bottles, it personally isn't for me.
A different coloured label on the caps of the different brews works for me, which i reckon is as good as a letter or number written with a marker.
 
I use different colour caps for each batch.
Same here, brewing small batches to try out lots of different things though and there are only so many colours available. Splitting batches to try out different yeasts too and different colour bottles helps there. Going to check out those sample bottles of house paint at some stage, can probably just get black/white caps then and give them a dab.
 
I use a coloured sticker on the cap. These come in lots of different colours.
By time it will come round to using a colour again, the first lot of that colour will be long gone...
 
Sharpie on the cap works for me. I have got it wrong on occasion but even then it works as all beer is good beer.
