Cleaning steriliser haze

Hi All,
I forgot to empty couple of demijohns after sterilizing them with wilko's steriliser. (Test book error!) now they have a sort of lime scale at the bottom and haze up the sides. All of this is resisting being scrubbed off.
Can anyone recommend a way of cleaning this off? I was tempted to try soaking in vinegar, but having spent so long trying to avoid turning things into vinegar, that cuts against the grain!
Can any of you brewing vets help?

Have you tried citric acid. Comes in granules and just add to hot water. Works wonders on scaled up kettles and boilers

I clean hard to reach equipment parts (such as my syphon) with oxy clean.

Just wanted to say that I finally plucked up the courage to try Dads_Ale's citric acid suggestion.
It worked like a charm!
