Homemade mash tun -Why a steel tap?

Hi

i am going to convert a cooler into a mash tun. why do all of the guides suggest using a steel ball valve? would a nylon tap not suffice?

why have cotton when you can have silk ?

They usually fit better and are more hard wearing.

You can use a normal tap, but the steel ones are easier to connect to, giving a 15mm female on the o/p.

You want to connect a filter on the inside and a tube on the outside. It's probably easier with metal fittings.
