I love Mild beer and "Yes", I know it's an "old man's drink" but I qualify! :thumb:
I've looked at a few Mild recipes and drunk more than my fair share of them in pubs.
I also like a low alcohol ale on the basis that I can drink a lot of it without falling over and I just love that "dark chocolate" taste that I get in some of the craft mild ales I buy in pubs.
So, here's my stab at a recipe just for me.
2,700 gram - Pale Malt, Maris Otter (Grain)
450 gram - Flaked Oats (Grain)
300 gram - Chocolate Malt (Grain)
250 gram - Caramel Malt (Grain)
250 gram - Crystal Malt (Grain)
Mash: 60 minutes
Boil: 75 minutes
30gram - Fuggles [4.5%] - Boil full 75 min (Hops)
10gm - Youngs Ale Yeast
Planned Beer Profile
OG: 1.045
FG: 1.016
ABV: 3.81%
Bitterness IBU: 19.0
Recipe Type: all-grain
Yield: 20 litres (23 litres of wort).
Grain Bill 3,950 gram
My thinking is:
o The Flaked Oats will give it a bit of body.
o IBU of 19 means it's not too bitter.
o The less bitterness the more chance of the "dark chocolate" flavour predominating.
o I don't expect it to last too long so high alcohol is not a requirement.
I've considered an aroma hop (EKG?) at 5 minutes but don't want anything to take away the chocolate flavour.
All comments very welcome.
