Plate filter advice

Hi,
Can anyone answer a couple of questions about plate filters please? Do they produce clear beer and does it remove flavours from the beer? I guess some yeast flavour may be removed as this is filtered out.

Yes you will produce clear beer.

Yes they remove flavour (by definition all filtering/clearing fuss to some extent)

Yes they are a pita.

Yes I have had one used it time and sold it.

Yes they are expensive to buy and run.

What's the bigger question? What do you achieve?
