made a pail malt today and only got 63% efficiency

mash temp was 67.7, and sparge water 77degrees with the run off at about 65 degrees

wondering if i didnt have it hot enough, but dont want to extract tannings

what size was the beer? what gravity did you get? I dont worry about efficiency these days. Yesterdays brew was 66% efficiency with og 1053.

I find you get a better tasting beer with lower efficiency but not sure how you can qualify that really.

Poor efficiency can be down to many things. usually poor malt, poor water quality or sparging too fast (fly sparge)

was 69l brew length, flysparge, at 1l per min approx

12.5kg marris otter .25kg sugar .5kg torrified wheat

got 1040

maybe it was the grain as was on special offer, so may have been getting a bit old

Both a tad high in my opinion. Mash @65oC, sparge @ 75oC. This works for me and I get 80% efficiency (Beer Engine)
