Hi. I regularly brew the simply stout with a kilo of BKE and I like the results.
This time I have no BKE, or any in the pipeline for a while.
I do have table sugar, brown sugar and 300g of brewing sugar. I also have some crystal malt, chocolate malt and roast barley.
Will I get away with using a kilo of sugar if I do a steep with the grains to add some body/flavour?

Give it a go if that’s all you’ve got, but it will taste thin in my opinion.
I use these Jars of malt extract for making yeast starters, the sort you can usually buy in Holland & Barret.

Meridian malt extract

When I started out on kits I used these if I was low on DME and I honestly couldn’t taste the difference. Much better than sugar if you want to avoid that twang.

My suggestion. Use some of your crystal and chocolate malts say 2:1 ratio, dark muscavado sugar (but no more than 150g) and golden syrup. Brew short say 19/20 litres.

Thanks Terry, I can get golden syrup on my next asda run.
If I brew the 1.8kg kit to 20L, with the grains steep and 150g of muscavado. Would you use 500g or 750g of syrup?
I tend to go for 4-4.5% usually.
Ta
