Feeling a bit naffed off- Brewed the ESB from the GH ‘bible’ and royally screwed up the temperature control of the mash due to a faulty sensor *sigh*: got OG 1042 instead of about 1053.
I don’t mind the lower strength (and i’ll have to wait to find the fermentability anyhow); but I have a feeling it may mess up the bitterness ratio.
Ho hum - I expect it’ll be drinkable

Talus mid coast IPA yesterday. 20 litres
4kg Maris otter
200g munich
200g oats
200g sugar
magnum @60 10ibu
100g Talus 30 mins at 80c- 20 ibu
us 05 18.5c . will dry hop 120g talus on day 6 for 3 days then keg.

Ro water plus 4g Gypsum, 2g calcium chloride, 1g epsom salts, 1g sea salt. hit ph 5.2

first experience with these hops- if the smell out of the packet is anything to go buy i am in for a treat!
Mid coast ?? Half way between east and west ??
 
Brewed the 1971 Boddington's recipe on Ron's site yesterday. I've been brewing Bodds recipes to find the best one.

Batch size: 5 gallons US (19L)

OG: 1.036
FG: 1.007

Bitterness: 28 IBU

@70% efficiency

Maris Otter - 4lbs 4.2oz (1.93kg) (67.8%)
Lager Malt - 13 oz (368.5g) (12.9%)
Flaked Corn - 3.3 oz (93.6g) (3.2%)
Enzyme/Distillers Malt - 3.3 oz (93.6g) (3.2%)
Wheat Malt - 3.3 oz (93.6g) (3.2%)
Invert Sugar - 9.7 oz (275g) (9.7%)

Mash @ 151°F (66°C) for 60 minutes

Boil for 90 minutes

Hops:

Fuggles - .72 oz (20.4g) (5.3 AAU) @ 90 minutes

EKG - .72 oz (20.4g) (3.5 AAU) @ 30 minutes

Dry Hop: EKG .25 oz (7.1g) (1.2 AAU)

Yeast:
Wyeast 1968

Looks awfully close to 1,047 to me.

Any ideas? Low draining rate/stuck mash.
I'm currently mashing my first proper all Pilsner-malt Budvar clone attempt.
Only a 18l batch (Hopcat), with 3kg malt 15k strike liquor and a little flaked barley.
Mashed-in and it seemed immediately a little stiff compared with all my Maris Otter pales and bitters despite a good long stirring in.
Yep, it overflowed my pipe top.
I've had to take the malt basket top off twice to rouse the Grain bed.
It's Home Brew Shop Farnborough crushed German Pilsner malt.
Isit just that Pilsner malt is finer or more sticky?
Seems better draining now, but it had me worried there!

Nor any burning smells!
Came out OG1050 18.1L.
That calculates out at 94% Brewhouse efficiency!
The spent malt was bland and entirely without taste and very caked in the (6L) sparged and drained malt pipe.
So I suspect my thoughts about fine grain crushing were at least partly the answer.
I will note to leave the top grid off in future if I think the grain is finely crushed, and stir frequently and rotate the pipe occasionally in the Hopcat to ensure the malt/liquor mixture stays loose during recirculation.
There was a little 'browning' on the base, only over the higher wattage hidden ring element presumably when bringing up to the boil, but definitely no charcoal present.
The hopped wort is also lovely and Pale straw coloured.
Sorry, I don't have a colourimeter.
So in the end, not a disastrous brew day as I had feared.
Let's see how it turns out using the Mangrove Jack Bohemian Pilsner yeast to ferment out in the nicely cool garage.
 
A WGV Maris Otter Smash, I saw a post on what are you drinking tonight with this commenting thay it was rather floral which is exactly the kind of beer I like to drink so I ordered 1.5 KG of Maris otter and 50g of Whitbread Golding.
Fermentor Volume: 9L
Estimated packed volume: 6.5L
OG 1.033
Estimated FG: 1.008
ABV: 3.2%
Efficiency: 62%

I am very much aiming for a session ordinary bitter like beer, so fingers crossed it will taste descent.

Well done for sticking with it 531 - funnily enough all my 'disaster' brew days seem far less of an issue the following day, and so far (touch wood) they always seem to produce drinkable beer ;-)

Looking back at what I did, I see mine wasn't a proper SMASH because I sneaked a bit of crystal and biscuit in there:

I just found your post and yes it was indeed yours, I am a real fan of earthy floral beers, so pretty much decided I needed to try WGV.
 
Just mashing grains for an English IPA using First Gold for first time.
Considered a single hop but had some Admiral whole leaf to use up and thought similar orangey profile
might work well for bittering, also leave me more of the First Gold for hopstand and dry hop.

This is batch # 25 after a bit more than a year of all grain, one of my favourite brews so far was a single hop English IPA with EKG,
hoping this will be somewhere near that mark.
