Something different again tonight…

I was in the garage on completely unrelated reasons and I accidentally came back in with one of these. Big malty nose, rich caramel sweetness on the palate with a good hit of spicy yeast flavours. Well attenuated and washes off the palate. And there’s even a second bottle out there!

I need to get some, I’ve not had a Westmalle Dubbel for a while - too long!

This was part of my Beer52 cash out case. I'm only just getting into Belgian beers. I've only had a few over the years mostly on a couple of holidays in Holland a few years back. I hadn't started on the path to beery learnedness back then and they were all put to the head with a second thought about what made them so great:beer1:

It’s closed down now but we used to have a Belgian pub in the next town. They sold well over 100 Belgian beers and every one was served in it’s own special glass. I miss that place 😢

Turns out the second bottle was a Brown Ale, not a Dubel. Just as malty, a lot drier, but I'm missing the rich caramel sweetness and the phenolic yeast flavours. It's a very good beer, but the Westmalle was easily a 10/10, should have had them the other way round.

They sell the westmalle in Tesco. 2.10 a bottle, I plan to stock up for Christmas. It's a lovely beer
