I have on the go an Old English Ale with an OG of 1.077, I used a CML real ale yeast and now after taking two readings I am getting 1.023@ 20C. I was thinking it should get lower than this. This gives me an ABV of approx. 6.9% where as beersmith says it should be about 7.8%. I am guessing it may be stuck or the yeast is finished without converting everything. My question is what next? do i try and stir the wort gently in hope of raising yeast activity or do i add more yeast?

How many days has it been in the fermentation vessel? Have you tested your hydrometer in water?

1077 is quite a high OG so you wouldn't expect it to go as low as a regular-strength beer. I don't know what the specs are for the CML yeast but plugging the figures you've got 70% attenuation. I use a variety of yeasts and typically get 70-78%, but as I say not familiar with CML.

So your brew may be finished, give it a few days to maybe drop a bit lower but it certainly isn't stuck mid-ferment.

Edit: here are the CML specs, looks like you're already in the target range.
