    Grand cru recipe

I am thinking about doing a Biab grand cru recipe for next xmas, probably 20 litres or less. From a little research I am thinking that I should go with a majority of pale or pilsner malt, something like Northern brewer hops for bittering and maybe some hallertauer or saaz for finishing, I would...

    1st BIAB with pictures

For my first foray into the world of Biab I went for a Belgian wit which is one of my favourite beer styles (and luckily also quite easy apparently) I started at 9am by filling the pot with water and heating to 70', added the grain which dropped it to 65' which was spot on, it had 30 minutes at...

    protofloc tablets

Hi all, I got some of these with my last grain order and intend using them on the BIAB brews I'm planning, my first brew is going to be a Belgian Wit, should I use them on this as the beer should be cloudy, or is it just that it clears some of the larger proteins out but will leave the...

    Ag - extract equivalents

Hi guys, I came across a brewing book today with what looked some cracking recipes in it (and a wide variety as well) the only problem for me was that it was ag, now all you ag brewers will say just change to ag but I just cannot justify the extra time, space required or equipment at this time...

Stuck fermentation or too many fermentambles

Hi guys, brewed an IPA better brew kit with 500g of light malt and 1kg of brew enhancer initial og was 1058 and it has had 20 days in the fv at a pretty constant 18'. The last three readings have been 1014 (probably a misread on the hygrometer) and two 1016's this seems pretty high and the...

    Whirlfloc tablets v isinglass etc

Hi guys, some recipes I'm looking at call for a tablet (or half on ale mans advice for a 23l boil) being added 15 minutes from end of boil. However on reading further this would only seem to help clear ag brews or extracts where loose grains have been used. I'd like to experiment with it in...

    A little advice please

I have a better brew IPA in the fv at the moment having been brewed on 3/2/14, I brewed it short to 22l for the later addition of a hop tea in the 2nd fv I also used 500g lme and 1 kg of enhancer. The og was 1058 and it's currently hitting 1014, I will obviously check the sg on consecutive days...

    Yeasty beer

No matter how carefully I pour my bottles I always seem to end up with a yeasty taste in my beer, does it just need leaving longer in the cool? It's had two weeks in the garage but seems to be quite loose.

    Dry malt over liquid?

Probably a daft question, but I searched the forum and couldn't find the answer anywhere, I'm looking at extract recipes, all of which call for the use of lme. I am struggling to find one supplier to get everything from, can you substituted dme for it and if so in what proportion please?

    Beer smith app

I got the above yesterday to assist with a venture into extract brewing, am I missing something as a lot of the recipes don't have volumes of water for boiling or topping up included?

    Hop substitution

A quick question guys, I have got a witbier recipe from beersmith which uses cascade hops, I think it's an American recipe so would it be ok to substitute saaz or something to make it more European, if so would it be the same weights specified (28.5g)? Thanks.

    Hopping advice please

Hi guys, I'm going to try dry hopping for the first time. The first will be on a lager that is in a secondary fv prior to priming, the second will be on an IPA that I've not even started yet. My main reason for this is that I like quite hoppy beer, secondly I'm hoping it will hide an annoying...

    Wilkos tapped keg

I see these are on sale at about £9 at the moment, I have only bottled my beer before but I have a Czech Pilsner ready for condtioning and no bottles. I was wondering, how good are these? Are they suitable to keep the lager in for 3-4 months until Summer? Should I get the CO2 capsules to top it...

Oh dear my first brew has gone wrong

Hi, I brewed a wherry kit on 25/10/13 as my first kit, being new i asked the advice of the guy in the hbs, he advised me not to use cold water for the primary as it was turning quite cold so i used tepid water from the tap. I then made it up to 23 Ltrs and pitched the yeast, the temp gauge was...
