Hi, just registered on here, started brewing at xmas & have done 2 different lagers (enjoyed :D ) & one pear cider. The pear cider has a strong ammonia type of smell to it, any ideas?? thanks

Welcome to the forum  and apologies for the delay in approving your first post.

Are you sure it's an ammonia type of smell, an not rotten eggs?

Fermentation can produce some very strange smells, especially if apples or pears are involved.

Give it chance, I'm sure the smells will pass and it will turn out ok :thumb:

thanks for the replies guys, yes it was more like rotten eggs but started slowly settling down. All gone now tho so it cant have been that bad!!!

If the pear cider is from a kit and contains a 'pear' flavouring I would strongly advise against adding the flavouring.
