Regular sugar leaves a bit of a tang but it's really cheap. You can get 2 bags of 1KG for £1 in farm foods. Brewing sugar gives a nicer taste but I'm glad I tried regular sugar first so I know that for me the difference is worth it.

But these are things you can experiment with that make the hobby so fun. And of course you get beer at the end of it.
Yes it's all about trial and error I suppose you could use syrup as well
 
I use two clips the red one holds the solid tube and the adjustable blue one i use to clamp on the flexible tube to stop the tube kinking where it attaches to the solid racking cane which can slows the flow it also helps keep the whole set up steady.

Don't buy a pressure barrel. Stick to bottling and wait until you've got enough experience to warrant getting some real kegs.
