Watch here - ‘I was dancing around days after having coronavirus’

5 Live caller 'dancing around days after having coronavirus’

A BBC Radio 5 Live listener called in from his hospital bed in where he's being treated for coronavirus.
Steve in London tested positive and has cystic fibrosis, which makes him more vulnerable to serious complications.
He says after a few days of feeling ill, he was up "dancing around his hospital room".

PM: We can 'turn the tide' on coronavirus crisis

The UK can "turn the tide" on the coronavirus crisis within 12 weeks, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

He said he was "absolutely confident" the UK could "send coronavirus packing" but only if people followed government advice.

Trials on a vaccine were expected to begin within a month, he said.

Mr Johnson said there were no plans to stop the London tube network but the capital will see tougher measures if people did not do more.

Speaking in Downing Street, he said the government would "enforce" its advice on social distancing "if it becomes necessary" because there was "some evidence that in some parts of the capital it is very patchy".

"I know how difficult it may be or it may seem right now, but if we do this together, we will save many, many thousands of lives," he added.

He also urged businesses to stand by their employees "because we will stand by you".

Speaking alongside the PM, Prof Chris Whitty, the UK's chief medical adviser, warned there would be a "lag" before the public's efforts to stem the spread of the virus would slow down case numbers.

In other developments across the globe:

  • Italy's death toll has risen by 427, overtaking China's toll
  • The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier tests positive for the virus
  • France and Italy could extend lockdowns
  • Asian countries are seeing a second wave of infections from people returning home
  • UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said a number of British nationals - estimated at about 400, were trapped in Peru because of restrictions imposed in the country
  • Confirmed cases worldwide have passed 220,000, while almost 9,000 people have died

Today's stats -

No stats on Indian or African countries, I can see them struggling.

I was thinking of Delhi and Mumbai in India, they're highly populated.

I was thinking of highly populated cities in India Delhi and Mumbai and Nigeria in Africa. I can see devastation could happen there but Mabe not.

My locals now started a drive through!

Loads of these in Australia. I don't know when they started but they were already a thing when I came here in 1990.
There was even talk last week of a drive through Covid 19 test centre.
I don't think it got going because of lack of staff. But I have heard of doctors coming out into the car park to take swabs.

Posted leaflets to all my neighbours with my contact details so they can call me for a chat, to collect goods swap books etc. My whole village as had a leaflet with at least one person's contact details

Nice one, there are Facebook pages popping up where people can ask for help it just goes to show there are are some decent folk about and we are not all panic buying ignorant scum.
Tony was discussing this on 5 live and said he knocked on his two neighbours houses before he set off to the studio and asked if they needed anything the days of old where we all knew all the people on our street have long gone maybe its time we should change that.

The only people near me who I ask live directly opposite. All the rest around here are my age or younger. When the whole thing kicked off I asked if they needed anything. No, and plenty of toilet paper has they had some delivered.
Fast forward about 10 days and I'm at the shops and they have toilet paper. We didn't need any but I phoned my neighbour. Still no, we have plenty.
Three days later they phone. We'll have that toilet paper now please.
We have taken them shopping since and bought stuff for them, but it took ages to explain the toilet paper offer was like a spur of the minute thing. Not we'll have some in a few days.

Thank you, FedEx man. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (American branch) has thoughtfully waived shipping fees thru the end of March to ease the hardships of the current hysteria, and to help keep us safe by not having to go out shopping for our necessities and risk exposure. While these bottles are already in stock, I'm feeling another order coming on.
