15 mins heating mash water while I mill grains (I use hot water from combi boiler)
5 mins mashing in
30-40 mins mash (no loss in efficiency I've found)
10 min sparge, or mash out if I do full volume mash
15-20 mins to reach boil
60 min boil while I clean up and sterilize fv Etc
Switch off and plonk pot in sink of cold water.

I then consider the job done. Though I usually change the water, and transfer the beer to the FV after about an hour, but that's just a quick pour. When the temp drops to pitching temp I add the yeast.

Is that the water from the hot tap?

It sure is. :thumb:

Genius. I was always taught not to drink the hot water from the tap, although I've no idea why..! I just put a new combi in last summer and it gets the water piping hot... could save me a good 15 mins to half an hour doing this...

Probably brewing again this weekend, so will give it a go...

BTW, went and got everything for that centennial brown ale today. Upped the MO crystal and sugar a smidgen to get the OG to 1.046.

I just boil the kettle twice and top up to the 4l I mash with cold water, it only needs a quick burst on the gas then to get to mash temp.

No idea if there are any reasons not to do it this way, but seems to work for me. Always wondered why people heat up from cold!

I normally only adjust the MO to alter the OG, but smidgens are fine.

You shouldn't drink hot water from a hot water tank but from a combo boiler it's fine. And you're boiling it anyway.

I was told the same with regards to hot water from tap because it's not from the mains therefore not necessarily the cleanest water to drink

although I haven't tried AG yet my last batch came out ok. me and my Mrs had two bought beers and after had Myn with no shock or unpleasant taste contrasts.
do you weigh down your hops with anything in particular? I've got pellets and was wandering if after putting some in the boil I could sprinkle some in the FV after the first few days rather than using a muslin. cheers

It's fine from a combi boiler, as it's fed directly from the mains cold water. Basically it's just like a kettle but with a pipe attached.

If you have a gravity fed system with a hot water cylinder, then you will have a header tank in the loft that feeds the cylinder. Open it up sometime and look at the crud that gets in the tank, including dead beasties. This is why you dont drink from the hot tap 😀

I've a combi boiler about 8 feet away from the kitchen tap that was brand new in August (I think it was August anyway). All of the pipework was also replaced as the old biker was in another area of the house. I'm going to try it anyway #rebel4life

AFAIK with pellets you dont need to bother putting them in a muslin bag. They just sink to the bottom of the FV on their own.
