As the article below says 27 million people are gardeners what better way to keep people occupied and at home under lockdown.


In the UK, there are around 27 million people who partake in gardening. This is a huge portion of the 64 million that currently reside in this country.

In 2014, the gardening retail market was said to be worth around £5 billion. The HTA states that the market for gardening is ‘buoyant’ and has seen steady growth over the last 10-15 years due to the amount of disposable income increasing over that time.

As well as gardening for aesthetics, a number are growing their own fruit and veg at allotments, or in their own back garden.

You can imagine queues going round the store several times i wouldn't like to be manning the door.

UK airlines say they have been told the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new restriction is expected to take effect at the end of this month.

Industry body Airlines UK said the policy needed "a credible exit plan" and should be reviewed weekly.

People arriving in the UK would have to self-isolate at a private residence.

Government and aviation sources told BBC News that the quarantine would mean people might be expected to provide an address when they arrive at the border.

It is not clear how long the new travel restriction would be in place and whether non-UK residents would be allowed to stay in rented private accommodation.

"We need to see the details of what they are proposing", said Airlines UK, which represents British Airways, EasyJet and other UK-based airlines, in a statement.

It is not clear whether there are plans to quarantine people arriving to the UK via other modes of transport. Eurostar and P&O ferries declined to comment, while other firms have not yet responded to the BBC's queries.

Actually, if you think about it, as long as they keep the cafés closed, garden centres are probably easier places to run an effective social distancing system than may supermarkets, and they seem to be managing it without becoming transmission hotspots, so it seems quite sensible to me. Gradually open up the parts of the economy like this, keep a keen eye on the R value, and slowly creep forward one baby step at a time.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed people on Sunday night the press would have us believe they are going to relax lockdown and let everyone do as they please that couldn't be further from the truth.

He announces a £2bn package to put cycling and walking “at the heart of the government’s transport policy”.
He will bring forward a “national cycling plan” in early June to set out how they will double cycling and increase walking by 2025.
The first stage worth £250m is a series of emergency interventions to make cycling and walking safer – including pop-up bike lanes, wider pavements and cyclist-only streets, he says.
They will also publish statutory advice for councils to accommodate for cyclists and walkers.
This will be a once-in-a-generation change to the way people travel in Britain, Shapps says.
Once of the few positives of this crisis is the fall in levels of air pollution, he says.
To try to preserve this cleaner air, he is also trialling use of e-scooters to get rental schemes up and running in cities as soon as possible.

I can only assume they have a holiday home up here as hotels etc are closed they may also think the lockdown will be lifted tomorrow night so things will open again.

London is heaving this bank holiday because it so hot and sunny (and I assume people are expecting BJ to announce the end of lockdown on sunday too). So I'm guessing people are wanting to escape the London hordes. I've stayed in (apart from going out for supplies) the past two days because there's so many people about and not even attempting to socially distance

A lot of it is a question of timing - it's a £5bn industry that's ridiculously dependent on just a handful of weekends in May for much of its business. If we were in January then it would be a low priority, but right now it's a question of either let them open or let them go bankrupt.

Plus there's the argument that it's kinda unfair that supermarkets and DIY stores are open for essential purposes and can sell garden stuff on the side. And as has been mentioned, there's the argument that it's an ideal thing for people to do to make lockdown more tolerable, which ultimately is A Good Thing if it makes people stay at home more. In the same way the Aussies have declared toy shops as an essential service, just to keep kids from wanting to escape home.

To be honest i don't see why all businesses cannot open as long as distancing can be guaranteed (face covering must also be used by all) i don't know how they are going to open restaurants, cafes and pubs and places where people gather in number.

This driver set off from London this morning to purchase this Audi from Manchester. He then continued to travel to Carlisle to purchase some speakers he’d seen on EBay. This is not acceptable. Driver issued fixed penalty

100% . its like shutting the stable door so to speak. should have being done in the first place to all incoming flights. we might not be in the mees we are in now if they had implemented this early on.

Sweden are not locked down and look at their stats -
