With all the restaurants etc closing we should see more food stuff reaching shops. I know my localish cash and carry, who also have a number of food factories supply most of the hotels, restaurants in Wales and beyond. They have extended their opening hours and made sure public are aware they are open to the public. Their shelves are sky high with all the essentials.

Madness!

To an extent London is similar. Loads of people out and about. Until things get immediate like in Italy people just dont take things seriously. We're a couple of weeks behind them. Already hospitals in London are past breaking point and turning away virus sufferers to go to other hospitals

Exclusive: London hospital trust becomes first to admit it is turning away coronavirus patients
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust has said it has transferred Covid-19 patients to neighbouring hospitals as demand for treatment surges

I am sure he did if anyone missed it its here - 5 Live Drive - 20/03/2020 - BBC Sounds

Taking my town as an example we have lots of coffee shops, cafes, cloths shops, gift shops, estate agents, charity shops, computer shops, hair dressers (we have loads of them) nail bars, antique shops, florists and jewellers i think these will all be closing soon.

I think thats why he put the 80% pay deal on the table before starting to close everything down to stop mass panic.

I think your right. Can you imagine the mayhem if virtually every non-essential shop/job were closed down and people thought they were going to be chucked out of work?

The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to acquire thousands of extra beds, ventilators and medical staff to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week.

It comes as the number of people in the UK to die with coronavirus rose to 233.

The agreement will see the private sector reallocate almost its entire national hospital capacity to the NHS.

The extra resources will also help the NHS deliver other urgent treatments.

According to the latest figures, there are more than 5,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

The number of people with coronavirus who have died is now 220 in England, seven in Scotland, five in Wales and one in Northern Ireland.

The most recent 53 deaths in England were people aged 41 to 94 who had underlying health conditions, NHS England said.

Supermarkets have gone on a hiring spree as demand surges as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Tesco, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl said they would hire thousands of staff after hugely increased demand saw shoppers clearing shelves.

That move came before the government said it would pay the wages of workers at firms affected by the pandemic.

And Sainsbury's has asked shoppers to stay 1m away from shop staff if possible, to help keep them safe.

Supermarkets have been overwhelmed by a wave of panic-buying as shoppers rush to stock up amid the coronavirus pandemic.

To combat the stockpiling, in recent days the major British supermarkets imposed limits on how much of each item shoppers can buy.

Along with other measures to cope with the increased demand, some of the chains have embarked on big recruitment drives for a total of more than 30,000 jobs.

Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket, wants to take on 20,000 temporary workers "to help feed the nation", it said.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented increase in demand for food and household products," the chain said.

"At Tesco, we're working around the clock to help ensure families have access to the shopping items they need.

"We launched our recruitment drive online on Wednesday and since then we have already been overwhelmed by support from the public and thank everyone who has applied to work with us in stores."

It added that "over the coming days thousands of new colleagues will join us".

The chain also announced on Saturday it will give all its workers across stores, distribution centres and customer engagement centres a 10% bonus on their hourly rate until 1 May - backdated to 9 March.

Frontline salaried managers will receive a 10% bonus on actual hours worked, it added.

Asda said it wanted to recruit more than 5,000 temporary staff from among people whose jobs have been impacted by the virus.

My daughter got paid off from Debenhams today, she was still on her probation (just left uni) and they have paid off everyone they could, even though the Gov have said they will help it’s a blow for her

Americans are panic buying ammunition at the moment, it's apparently very scarce - like they need any more guns and ammo!

The solution to any problem, in any situation remains the same. More Firepower. In fact, More Goddamn Firepower ashock1.
Did they sell outta Napalm at the General Store already?

Having been made redundant twice myself I feel for all the people who will lose their jobs its going to be especially tough as job opportunities will be almost non existent and the ones that are being created by the supermarkets etc are likely to be short term.

Yeah it’s not nice but in a sense I’m glad she can stay home and not interact with the public, I wouldn’t want her to work in a supermarket right now although im grateful for those that do.
Some companies will use it as a cop out to ditch costs.
At the end of the day if we all come through this safely health before wealth

My son works in Tesco but only officially one shift a week he has been doing a lot of overtime recently as staff are isolating, i wish he didn't work there at the moment but he needs the money as he has to pay to travel to college.

Many schools have already been in touch with parents, but if you think your children qualify you can also contact your local authority.

Vulnerable children include those with a social worker or special educational needs.

A child's parent is a key worker if their job is considered critical to keeping the country running and/or fighting the spread of the virus. The government has published a list of key worker jobs:

  • Health and social care: Doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, social workers, care workers, frontline health staff (including volunteers), and those producing and distributing medicines, supplies and protective equipment
  • Education and childcare: Teaching staff, nursery workers, social workers and those in special education
  • Key public services: Those in the justice system, religious staff, charities, workers delivering frontline services, those responsible for the deceased, journalists in public service broadcasting
  • Local and national government: Those essential to the effective delivery of the response to the pandemic, and benefits services
  • Public safety and national security: Police and support staff, MoD civilians, contractors and armed forces personnel critical to the virus response
  • Transport: Those in air, water, road, rail passenger and freight services and anyone in transport systems through which supply chains pass
  • Food and other necessary goods: Those in production, distribution, sale and delivery of food and other necessary goods
  • Utilities, communications and financial: Staff in banks, building societies and financial markets, as well as those in gas, oil and electricity sectors, those in network operations and call centres, 999 and 111 staff, postal services, delivery and waste disposal sector
A child only needs one parent to be a key worker to be eligible to attend school.

I am more concerned about the global economy in the aftermath, we still don't know if self isolating is going to work. The virus isn't going to go away, is it going to have a yo yo effect?
Its a really tough decision for all the governments, one thing I am sure of though a valuable lesson has been taught. Test kits will be stock piled, people tracking will be sharper, testing stations set up in rapid response to this happening again.
But the economy must be protected. We will come out of this into a recession but hopefully not depression.

I’ve yet to face the shops, but thankfully have long being in the habit of buying stuff I don’t need so have several years worth of purchases of random dried goods to use up.

As for panic buying the Extent of it for me is getting my next home brew order in now rather than towards the end of April/early May (As concerned a lot of the suppliers will have to close before too long).
I don't think so. With the pubs closed, the homebrew suppliers are inundated with orders. As they also supply microbreweries (who aren't microbrewing very much at the moment as the pubs are closed) there should also be plenty of stock.

MrMQ just came back from a walk/shopping trip. She walked down one of Peckhams most trendy/hipster streets, Bellenden Road. She reports that all the yummymummy's/hipsters have bought alcohol/food from the nearby shops and are sitting on the benches outside the pubs socialising as if nothing is happening - FFS you twats. GO HOME!!
Bellender Rd is aptly named, it seems.

In case people don't think of it - wash your hands straight away when you've been out.
Visitors - get them to wash their hands first thing. Impolite? So effin what.
Door handles, keys, phones - wash them.
Shopping trolley and basket handles - you can make a soap solution and bottle it and put it on your hands before using them.
Lift buttons - use your elbow or get someone you don't mind dying to press it for you.

I'm the least panicky git you'll meet, but I don't mind instilling it in others.

It's "Mother's Day" tomorrow. athumb..

For those who want their kids to get onto the "property ladder", I suggest that you take the whole tribe over to see grandma and granddad. aheadbutt

Of course, maybe over in the USA the people are buying guns and ammo in order to fight off such visits!
