I'm not suggesting for one minute that this is the reason, but my mate who had coronavirus back in July (not too badly, at that) says his sense of smell and taste is still impaired. That would be a flipping nightmare...

Took me 6-8 weeks to get my smell back. Taste, not so long.

Don’t know yet, still thinking about it. I will probably have another taste of each (maybe a couple of pints) and decide whether to keep it of pour it - I see no sense in drinking something I’m not enjoying.

It’s also possible this is down to one of the ingredients or something I’ve done but just now I’m not seeing the connection and just guessing at over-heating.

My coconut porter is getting binned as well. In my earlier days of brewing I would of forced myself through them.

I feel your pain had to dump a few beers recently which where almost certainly damaged by the high temperatures, but better than trying to force down a mediocre beer.


As for what I’m drinking Church HanBrewery Teardrop Butter (3.8%) not anything exceptional but a fairly easy drinking ordinary bitter.

No that's a bock which is good to drink anytime. I would chill it and pour, let it warm up in the glass

While I’m sorry to hear that, it’s also good to have it confirmed heat might actually be the culprit because that’s an easy explanation.

The first of the beers I don’t know is this coffee porter from Magic Rock. It doesn’t say a lot about it on the can but it’s 5.4%.

Opening the can there is a lovely smooth cold-pressed coffee aroma. The flavour is a nicely balanced blend of porter and what I would assume to be cold-pressed coffee. Nice if you like porter and coffee - I do or I wouldn’t have bought it!

yep i also experience this every summer for a month of brews or so, oxidation i think takes its toll at higher temps. i also think it has something to do with the swings from hot to cold as well.

also before you dump it may be worth lagering them at colder temps for a few weeks. they will be different but maybe the change will be good. just don't expect the hops to ever come back.

and next summer focus on saison! and other various belgians. or get your AC replacement ready before hand

Caledonian Porter Clone (4.2%)

This was bottled at the end of May so had had close to three months in the bottle now. I was initially a bit disa with this, however time has really smoothed out the flavour and overall left a fairly decent session beer.

Had one on my gingery beers earlier and now having a Warsteiner. Had some cheddar with it but now it tastes like doritos.

In the absence of a chilling fridge, uk weather is serving up a nice serving temp of 13c.
