Starting out a bit early today after setting up the christmas tree.

This is @strange-steve s german pilsner.

Pours a very nice straw yellow, pours clear and has a small whit head that dissipates in a couple of minutes.
Aroma is spicy and floral hops with a bit of a water cracker background. I also get a bit of alcohol esters but I am not sure if the that is the spicy fruity from the hops or alcohol.
Flavour is a nice light crackery malt, a bit of sweetness with a light caramel or brown sugar hint. Then there is a very solid noble hop character, its spicy and earthy and the bitterness is quite firm and lingers.
Overall this one drinks a bit more like a czech pilsner but the hops tasted to me much more like a german pilsner. Towards the end of it I almost felt like I was drinking a pilsner urquell without the diacetyl they typically throw, however the hops seemed more of the hersbrucker variety than saaz, or maybe even a mix of the two. I really enjoyed this one and think it was a really well made pilsner. The maltiness was solid and really nice. I think with a bit more time the hops will mesh even more with the malt and it will probably get better as it ages.
Thanks for sending me this one, I really enjoyed it. I really like the more bitter Czech or bohemian pilsners so this one was right up my alley.

Thanks for the review @Pennine, and I totally agree that the malt profile makes this a bit more Czech than German. I put that down to using WLP833 whereas 830 might have been more style-appropriate. Hops were all hallertau mittelfruh which I absolutely love in a lager, even more so than saaz I would say. Thanks again for your thoughts, they're appreciated as always :hat:

That's very interesting normally with mittelfruh I get a bit more floral in the flavour which was why I suspected hersbrucker. I should have just gone with the hallertau description though. I really like saaz but overall I think tettnang is my favorite noble hop. That would be a great experiment running the three side by side. hmmm @Hazelwood Brewery

Ridgeway Criminally Bad Elf Barley Wine (10.5%)

I bought this about two years ago in a Christmas market and it has sat in my garage ever since. It’s probably what would should be classed as a traditional barley wine, very rich and one to be slowely sipped. its a nice winter beer not much more can be said of it.

I’m game - but my schedule is full at the moment. Mind you, my Czech Pilsner is Saaz and the German Pilsner I’m brewing in the week will be Tettnanger, Steve’s German Pilsner is Mittelfruh - so we’re well on our way.

I just finished a weizenbock from @pilgrimhudd , yes it's gone and no review but he did send me two so the next one will get a formal one. Overall I rather enjoyed it, it was nice and malty with a bit of tart wheat kick with some really nice raisin and dried stone fruit flavours. I did get a bit of banana and bubblegum in the aroma up front so this one is ticking all the boxes. I l will drink the next one over Christmas as I think a bit of age will be nice.

Thanks for sending!

Behind door 5 of my advent was this 11.3% imperial maple brown ale from Wylam.
I'm starting it early so I've got a chance of finishing it before bedtime.
There's very little aroma (maybe a bit cold) but lots of nutty maple sweetness in the flavour and its very clean for the strength.
acheers.
