Styles for the HBF Brewing Competition are general and encompass a number of sub-styles. As such, some variations from the following will exist. However, submitted entries should always adhere to the core principles of the style.

Styles will be added as and when new categories are introduced to the competition.

Ciders

Plain Ciders
Includes all plain apple or pear ciders without any extra flavourings. Entries can be pressed fruit, kits or turbo ciders.

Fruit Ciders
Includes any type of fruit flavoured ciders. Entries can be from pressed fruit, kits or turbo ciders.

Experimental Ciders
This category can include any of your strange and wonderful creations. However it must be recognisable as a cider and be drinkable.

Seasonal Ciders
This category can include any cider with a flavour that relates to a particular season or time of year e.g. Mulled cider for Christmas.

Wines

Red Wines
This category is for any wine falling under the general guidelines for the colour of red wine. "The actual colour of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines." Entries can be from pressed fruit, kits or Supermarket Juice Wines.

White Wines
This category is for any wine falling under the general guidelines for the colour of white wine. "The colour of the wine can range from straw-yellow through to yellow-green and yellow-gold coloured." Entries can be from pressed fruit, kits or Supermarket Juice Wines.

Fruit Wines
This category includes any type of fruit flavoured wine. The entry can be of any colour and can be sparkling or still. Entries can be from pressed fruit, kits or Supermarket Juice Wines.

Experimental Wines
This category can include any of your strange and wonderful creations. However it must be drinkable.

Seasonal Wines
This category can include any kind of wine with a flavour that relates to a particular season or time of year e.g. Ginger wine for Christmas.

Sparkling Wines
This category is for any sparkling wine, the wines can be of any style that is sparkling. "Sparkling wine is a wine with significant levels of carbon dioxide in it, making it fizzy." Entries can be from pressed fruit, kits or Supermarket Juice Wines.

Meads

Traditional Mead (Show Mead)
"plain" mead: that which has honey and water as a base, with no fruits, spices or extra flavorings.

Other Meads
This category is for any other type of Mead. Melomel, Cyser and Methaglin are the most popular. A more expansive list complete with descriptions can be found at the link below.
