The US handling has been, to put it kindly, an unmitigated disaster.
If news seeps into the UK media claiming that the US reacted properly on a national level on anything, just look at our statistics again. The statistics can be believed, more or less, for now. I doubt that there is anything but pity or shock at our handling, but just in case. If your news organizations show clips of the US president speaking on the corona virus, beware, and best to ignore it.

At the state level, there are some bright spots. Many Governors (in charge of the states, more or less) are doing the best they can using science but all are not working in the same direction.

Just to be clear, I love the US because of what it ultimately stands for, usually, and the Constitution. I do not love watching it being mistreated so.

I know your situations sometimes look bleak, but to me? It would be glorious to have the US in your position.

I think most people in the UK have a reasonable idea what your orange master is like. Don't know how the US news media portray him I would guess it would depend what political party they align with. Most of us had a good laugh when he suggested injecting patients with bleach.

The media (which I have no love for) tends to be fairly hard on any party in power because that's what they do. In the main, although they have their vested interests, they have to relay it mostly straight or they won't be taken seriously.
There is only one, major, right-wing media source in which the personalities openly campaign for right-wing candidates. I don't know how fair and balanced that is or if that network can even be called a news station.

Using light and chemicals as a way to combat someone inflicted with COVID-19 was an especially, low point for mankind and science, setting us back, here in the US, some five-hundred years. In fact, I'm on my way to the store now to go get me some leeches to bleed the evil out of myself.

Well worth getting a drink before you read it though!
It's funny you mention that. I had been knee-deep in everything I could get my hands on, politics-wise, during this term--never felt the need before but this president was different. Not that it does any good or has done any, but I felt obligated to see what was happening in the WH and Congress.
I said "funny" because I had to shut it all down 100%--no YouTube, WaPo, The Atlantic, WSJ, NYT, Axios, The Hill, FOX--because it was affecting my life negatively.
It's been 24 hours.
I've been hanging around here more and also the US sister-site.
Edit: if that's the article I think it is, it came out a few days or more back? If so, I would have read it.
Edit: Last thought: it's like you're a drug dealer peddling the hard stuff, getting me to relapse. That's just me joking around.
Cheers.

Coronavirus: Preston young people targeted as lockdown imposed

Young people in Preston are being urged "Don't kill Granny" as new lockdown measures come into force.

Extra restrictions were imposed after Covid-19 infections rose in the city.

Adrian Phillips, chief executive of Preston City Council, said it was "alarming to see that the under-30s are contracting it at a significant rate".

"I know our director of public health has said 'Don't kill Granny' to young people to try and focus the message,'" he said.

Since midnight, residents in the Lancashire city are banned from mixing with people from outside their social bubble in homes, gardens, and indoor venues, such as pubs.

They can meet in groups of up to six - or more than six if they are from two households - in outdoor areas such as parks and beer gardens.

The restrictions will be reviewed next week, with any changes due to be announced by Friday.

Socialising between people from different households in pubs and homes had been seen as the main cause for the spike, local authorities said.

Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Lancashire's director of public health, told BBC Breakfast that "47% of positive cases are in younger people - 30 years and below".

"Contrary to the common myth that this affects the south Asian groups the most, we have found that it's roughly affecting white ethnic backgrounds as well as south Asian groups in Preston almost equally," he said.

There were 61 new cases in Preston in the seven days to August 4, the equivalent of 42.6 cases per 100,000 people - up from 21.7 per 100,000 in the previous seven days.

This is concerning if its true. From my understanding you need quite a high uptake of vaccination to achieve herd immunity (and of course there's no given that a vaccination will be along any time soon). Doing a quick bit of googling, for measles, 19 out of 20 people need to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. Looks like the anti-vaxxers might doom us all

"Only half the population of Britain definitely would accept being vaccinated against Covid-19. That is the shock conclusion of a group of scientists and pollsters who have found that only 53% of a test group of citizens said they would be certain or very likely to allow themselves to be given a vaccine against the disease if one becomes available.

By contrast, one in six (16%) said they would definitely not or would be unlikely to accept a vaccine, according to research by King’s College London and Ipsos Mori. In addition, it was found that one in five (20%) said they would only be “fairly likely” to go ahead with inoculation."

well if you can't jab enough of the population, jab those most at risk, and if they don't want it and die of covid - what more can a government do?
an issue i believe though is that vaccines can be less effective in the elderly :(

My ex who is a band 7 Nurse has pretty much this view on it, she thinks it will end up just being aprt of teh flu jab cock tail in years to come and teh vulnerable people will just get the jab if needs be and or people who want it.

Odd talking to her now, shes totally changed tack, when it all kicked off and she was moving and dealing with teh bodies and all that she was very on edge about it all, now shes gone very blasé and just says you know its something that will probably just fall into teh categories of other coronvirii and that we will get better at fighting them and like other flus will get better medicines better treatments and the weaker will get jabs and alot of us will not even know we have it and will build it all up and children are a key to that.

MAYHEM IN THE HAMLET!!

"A mob of anti-mask protesters stunned grocery shoppers after storming a supermarket yelling 'You guys need to resist'.

Members of group StandUp X walked into the Morrison's store in Peckham, south London, to lecture people on wearing face coverings during the pandemic.

As shoppers harmlessly filling up their baskets looked on, the protesters walked through shouting that people should not submit to coronavirus rules.

And they told people buying food: 'Your masks are so bad for you.'

Members of group StandUp X walked into the supermarket in Peckham, south London, to lecture people on wearing masks
One shouted: 'You are conditioned to believe everything the government tells you.

'Never ask questions. You never ask questions, just wear a mask.

'You know this agenda is the new world order agenda. They are conditioning you for the new world order guys. You guys need to resist.

'Resist the new world order guys. How many people die from the flu every year?

The unmasked protesters insisted the safety measures were not necessary to stop Covid-19 and people should ask questions
Bizarrely for an anti-mask protest, one campaigner was seen wearing one on his face, similar to the type in the Scream films"

alot of us will not even know we have it

Well that's certainly one thing that is different now, we now are much more aware of how much infection results in minimal symptoms. And we're much better at treating it - fatality rates have halved since the early days - and have a better handle on how to avoid it in the first place - masks and avoiding the 3 C's.

But we still have the uncertainty about how immunity will fade (or not), and the long-term consequences still seem pretty nasty - a small study in the Lancet this week suggested 68% have neurological problems during infection, going down to 55% after three months. Christmas will definitely be bad - too cold to be outside, lots of hugging family and drinking, it's a perfect storm.

Joking aside MyQul there are times when living in a small boring market town has its advantages and this is one of them.
